SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Ralph S. Hurwitz of Springfield, who
4passed away on October 18, 2023; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Ralph Hurwitz was born to Henry and Bertha
6(Chason) Hurwitz in Petersburg on September 8, 1924; he
7enlisted in the U.S. Army on November 17, 1943, serving in the
8Medical Detachment 399th Infantry in the European Theater; he
9earned the Medical Badge, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the
10American Theater Ribbon, the Fame Theater Ribbon with two
11bronze stars, the World War II Victory Medal with two Overseas
12Bars, and the Purple Heart; he was honorably discharged on May
1315, 1946; he attended Iowa State University and earned his
14Bachelor of Science in Forestry and Economics from the
15University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign; he married Betty
16Greenberg on April 10, 1949; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Ralph Hurwitz began working as executive vice
18president and chairman of the Policy Management Committee for
19the Barker-Lubin Company in 1950; he became a partner with
20Hurwitz Enterprises in 1970; he was a registered real estate
21and insurance broker in the State; while he officially retired
22in 1986, he continued to be active in the real estate
23profession; and

1    WHEREAS, Ralph Hurwitz was chairman of the Springfield
2Airport Authority and a board member of the Memorial Hospital
3Foundation; he was a member of the Economic Development
4Council for Springfield and Sangamon County, the Governor's
5Council of Health and Physical Fitness, the Springfield Art
6Association, the Sangamo Club, the Springfield Board of
7Realtors, the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, the Board of
8Aeronautics Advisor State of Illinois, the Illinois Hotel and
9Motel Association, the American Hotel and Motel Association,
10and the National Home Builders Association; he was the past
11president of Springfield Air Rendezvous and the Springfield
12Aviation Council; he was also the past chairman of the
13Governor's Prayer Breakfast Committee and a past board member
14of Child and Family Services and the Boys Club of America; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Ralph Hurwitz was proud of his heritage, serving
16as a member and past president of Temple B'rith Shalom and as a
17past president of the Springfield Jewish Federation; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Ralph Hurwitz received the Sertoma Service to
19Mankind Award and the Golden Boy Award from the Boys Club of
20America; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Ralph Hurwitz was preceded in death by his
22daughters, Mary Jean Hurwitz and Lynne Hurwitz-Jackman, and

1his siblings, Irving and Evelyn; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Ralph Hurwitz is survived by his wife; his son,
3Joe (Anna) Hurwitz; his grandchildren, Mary "Mimi" (Katie)
4Hurwitz, Jake (Amber) Hurwitz, Henry (Kelly) Hurwitz, and
5Michael (Kayla) Hurwitz; his great-grandchildren, Albie
6Hurwitz, Hudson Hurwitz, Aubrey Hurwitz, Chloe Hurwitz, Willow
7Hurwitz, Lola Hurwitz, Theo Hurwitz, Lily Hurwitz, and Charlie
8Tinsley; and his nieces, nephews, and friends; therefore, be
9it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
12Ralph S. Hurwitz and extend our sincere condolences to his
13family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
14further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Ralph Hurwitz as an expression of
17our deepest sympathy.
