SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Ann Shalla of Chicago, who passed away on June 25, 2022 at the age of 84; and

WHEREAS, Ann Shalla was born to Ray Hamill and Donna (Blake) Simpson in New York, New York on April 10, 1938; and

WHEREAS, Ann Shalla graduated from University High School in Champaign in 1955; and

WHEREAS, Ann Shalla married Theodore Shalla in 1957 and moved to Chicago, where she had two sons, then divorced and pursued an acting career; and

WHEREAS, Ann Shalla lived in Franklin Park, Chicago, and Oak Park in Illinois, in South Pasadena, Hollywood, and North Hollywood in California, and in Green Valley, Arizona; and

WHEREAS, Ann Shalla performed on the television show Matlock; she also won a world record for laughing, a record that stood at four hours and six minutes on the David Frost special; she worked for Actor's Equity in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Ann Shalla had a lifelong love for all forms of creativity, including acting, comedy, performance, architecture, interior design, sewing, fine arts, music, and cooking; she had an exuberant and friendly personality, leading her to make friends all over the world; she was always the life of the party and was a passionate supporter of women's rights and the rights of marginalized people; and

WHEREAS, Ann Shalla was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Simpson Sheets; her brother, David Kim Simpson; and her dogs, Kerrie and Marilyn; and

WHEREAS, At the time of her passing, Ann Shalla was survived by her sons, Quintin and Kevin (Tory Ferrara); her brothers, Jim (Teri) Simpson, Bob Simpson (Betty Anderson), and Frank (Suzan) Simpson; her grandchildren Luke (Angelina Lucero), William, and Jamie; her nieces and nephews, Kathy Kramer (Suzzy McCafferty), Justin Simpson, Josh Simpson (Natalie Baxter), Larkin (Peter) O'Leary, and Harriet (Ben) Hollingsworth; her former sister-in-law, Kris Simpson; and her dear friends, Sally Havens, Kayri Mealy, Kathy Lamkey, Hal Baim, Pat Benson, and Kay Thompson; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Ann Shalla and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Ann Shalla as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
