SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Education Amendments of 1972, containing
3Title IX, was signed into law by President Richard Nixon 51
4years ago on June 23, 1972; and
 
5    WHEREAS, After the passage of Title IX, Congress built in
6a six-year period for secondary and post-secondary schools to
7achieve compliance; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The National Collegiate Athletic Association
9(NCAA) introduced women's championships for intercollegiate
10sports 50 years ago; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of
12sex in the administration of any education program receiving
13Federal financial assistance; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Remarkable gains have been made to ensure equal
15opportunity for women and girls under the inspiration and
16mandate of Title IX; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Title IX serves as the nondiscrimination
18principle in education; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Title IX has moved this nation closer to the

1fulfillment of access and opportunities for women and girls in
2all aspects of life; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Title IX has increased educational opportunities
4for women and girls, resulting in improved graduation rates,
5increased access to professional schools and nontraditional
6fields of study, and improved employment opportunities; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Title IX has increased opportunities for women
8and girls in sports, leading to greater access to competitive
9sports, and has helped build strong values, such as teamwork,
10leadership, discipline, work ethic, self-sacrifice, pride in
11accomplishment, and strength of character; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Title IX has been instrumental in fostering 51
13years of progress toward equality between men and women in
14educational institutions and the workplace, and with further
15progress still needed, Title IX will remain instrumental in
16achieving that goal; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the
19accomplishments of Title IX of the Education Amendments of
201972, also known as the Patsy Takemoto Mink Equal Opportunity
21in Education Act, in increasing opportunities for women and
22girls in all facets of education; and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That we recognize the magnificent
2accomplishments of women and girls in sports, as well as the
3need to continue pursuing the goal of Title IX.
