SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Melvin H. Matter of Minonk, who passed
4away on October 21, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Melvin Matter was born to Herman and Rosina
6(Gastmann) Matter in Woodford on June 29, 1926; he started
7school at Dixie Grade School in Paulding, Ohio; after the
8family moved back to Illinois, he attended Center Country
9School in Groveland Township and graduated from Rutland High
10School in 1944; he served in the U.S. Army during World War II
11in the 3rd Engineer Combat Battalion, 24th Infantry Division
12and was stationed in Kokura, Japan; he married Phyllis M.
13Voigts in Ransom on March 1, 1953, and they lived in rural Dana
14until retirement, when they moved to Minonk; and
 
15    WHEREAS, After graduating from high school, Melvin Matter
16went into farming; upon his return from the Army, he farmed in
17the Rutland/Dana area; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Melvin Matter served as the Groveland Township
19Clerk from 1977 to 1997; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Melvin Matter was actively involved in his
21community; he served on the LaSalle County Farm Bureau Board

1and the Minonk-Dana-Rutland School Board and was Precinct
2Committeeman in LaSalle and Woodford Counties; he taught
3Sunday School for over 30 years and served on the Church
4Council for 14 years at St. Paul's Church in Minonk; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Melvin Matter was an active member of Minonk
6American Legion Post 142, where he served as commander; he
7helped coordinate many Memorial Day and Veteran's Day Services
8and was an advocate for veterans; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Melvin Matter was a man of great character and
10wisdom; he enjoyed having conversations with everyone he met;
11he rode his bicycle around Minonk, danced, and played cards
12until his passing; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Melvin Matter was preceded in death by his
14parents and his wife; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Melvin Matter is survived by his two daughters,
16Judith Matter and Janis (Brent) Hamer; his two grandchildren,
17John and Carolyn Megow; his brother, Raymond Matter; and his
18sister, Dorothy Kuhl; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21Melvin H. Matter and extend our sincere condolences to his

1family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
2further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family of Melvin Matter as an expression of
5our deepest sympathy.
