SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Power generation companies have invested billions
3of dollars in Illinois to make the state the fifth largest
4generation state in the country; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Unlike California and other States in the Union,
6Illinois is a net exporter of electricity in the Midwest
7region; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The power industry supports more than 285,000
9jobs in Illinois; 103,000 of those jobs are direct high paying
10jobs that run the power plants 24 hours a day; many if not most
11of the jobs are union jobs that pay twice the national median
12salary; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The electric power industry accounts for five
14percent of the Illinois economy, with the industry and its
15workers accounting for at least $3.7 billion in taxes in every
16community in the State; these taxes keep property taxes low in
17the counties that contain power generation assets; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The electric power industry runs plants that keep
19Illinois electric power reliable and effective; therefore, be

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we strongly support
3the electric industry in Illinois and stand behind the men and
4women who operate the electric plants every day and keep the
5lights on for Illinois citizens; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, We support keeping Illinois an exporter of power
7in the Midwest, therefore not relying on other state
8legislatures for our power; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That we support public policy for reliable and
10moderately priced electric power that will keep large electric
11power plants operating well into the foreseeable future; and
12be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be sent
14to the Governor and to the Speaker of the House.
