HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology
3at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign was established
4in 2003 to advance life science research and stimulate
5bioeconomic development in Illinois by investing in the
6burgeoning field of genomics; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology
8at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, a
9state-of-the-art research facility with a structure designed
10to promote communication and collaboration among its members,
11was dedicated in 2007; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The membership of the Carl R. Woese Institute for
13Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois has grown to
14comprise a transdisciplinary contingent of more than 200
15faculty and affiliate members and more than 700 other research
16staff and students, all from more than 40 different academic
17departments; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology
19at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is celebrating
20its 15th anniversary of path-breaking genomic research to
21address grand societal challenges in the areas of agriculture,
22environmental conservation, health, wellness, technology, and

1society; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology
3at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is committed to
4the use of science to positively impact society and also to the
5larger goal of promoting an open dialogue between science and
6society; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we commend the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at
10the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on its 15 years of
11significant societal, scientific, and scholarly contributions
12made to research at the intersection of science and society
13within the state of Illinois, resulting in over $520M in
14funding and the establishment of more than 20 start-up and
15small companies; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology
18at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as a symbol of
19our respect and esteem.
