SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Gary GaMaille Barnes of Oak Park, who passed away on March 14, 2024 at the age of 87; and

WHEREAS, Gary Barnes was born to CW Barnes and Roby Gregory Barnes in Monticello on November 23, 1936; he graduated from Monticello High School, where he was notably active in athletics and music; and

WHEREAS, Gary Barnes received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from DePauw University in 1958, where he was a member of the basketball team, and earned a master's degree in divinity and social work from Yale University in 1962; and

WHEREAS, Gary Barnes was principled and steadfast in his convictions, particularly around the subject of technology; he spent ten years consolidating his ideas into a hand-written book, which was, unfortunately, never published; and

WHEREAS, Gary Barnes spent his life appreciating fine craft; he lovingly worked on his home on Humphrey Avenue, meticulously restored antiques, and greatly enjoyed woodworking; and

WHEREAS, Gary Barnes spent his leisure time listening to jazz and staying active; he was an outdoorsman who loved to camp and hike, and he enjoyed playing team and individual sports such as volleyball and tennis; he remained deeply engaged in local sports and politics, was an active community member in Oak Park, and a loyal fan of Illinois sports teams; and

WHEREAS, Gary Barnes will be remembered for his stubbornness, his passion, and his humor; and

WHEREAS, Gary Barnes was preceded in death by his parents; and

WHEREAS, Gary Barnes is survived by his daughter, Rachel Barnes Pledger; his grandchildren, Scott Thomas Pledger and Rebecca Anne Pledger; and his brother, Gregory (Yoko) Barnes; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Gary GaMaille Barnes and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Gary GaMaille Barnes as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
