SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Norma Jean Glazebrook of Godfrey, who
4passed away on August 9, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Norma Glazebrook was born in Alton to Frank J.
6and Clara D. (Herman) Helwig on February 13, 1932; she
7graduated from Alton High School; she married Robert
8Glazebrook in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 16, 1973, and he
9preceded her in death on November 20, 1995; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Norma Glazebrook worked at The Telegraph
11newspaper in Alton for 21 years before retiring in 1973; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Norma Glazebrook was a national baton twirling
13champion and started the Piasa Indians Baton Twirling Drill
14Team in 1951, a group of baton-twirling, flag-bearing young
15girls that traveled the United States and performed shows at
16state fairs, parades, and national competitions; during her
17tenure, the team won a national VFW title at the New York State
18Fair in 1964 and a World Fair championship in 1965; she retired
19in 1972; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Norma Glazebrook was a member of the Evangelical
21United Church of Christ and the Illinois State Chapter of the

1P.E.O. Sisterhood; she served on the Village of Godfrey Park
2Board until her death; she joined Make-A-Wish Illinois in 1996
3and helped fulfill nearly 300 wishes in her 25 years of
4service; she was always active with community service in both
5the Alton and Godfrey areas; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Norma Glazebrook was responsible for the creation
7of the Robert E. Glazebrook Community Park, consisting of over
890 acres of land she donated to the town of Godfrey in honor of
9her late husband; through her donation, Glazebrook Park has
10grown into one of the Midwest's premier parks and is a treasure
11to area residents; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Norma Glazebrook received a number of accolades
13during her lifetime, including the Studs Terkel Humanities
14Service Award from the Illinois Humanities Council, the Pride
15Inc. Outstanding Citizen Award in 2000 for her numerous acts
16of community service in the River Bend area, the Volunteer of
17the Year Award in 1999, 2000, and 2011, and the Gordon F. Moore
18Service Above Self Award by the Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club in
192013; she was a finalist in the selection of Channel 5's Five
20Noteworthy Volunteers in the Metro St. Louis area; she was
21named one of the Alton YMCA's Women of Distinction in 2011; she
22was honored as one of the marshals of the Alton Halloween
23Parade in 1961 and again for the parade's 100th anniversary in
242016; and

1    WHEREAS, Norma Glazebrook was known for her kind,
2generous, and spunky spirit; she will be remembered for her
3endless contributions to Alton and Godfrey and for making the
4River Bend region a better place to live, work, and raise a
5family; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Norma Glazebrook was preceded in death by her
7parents; her husband; and her stepson, Thomas Glazebrook; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Norma Glazebrook is survived by her stepchildren,
9Robert Earl Glazebrook Jr. (Donna) and Richard Brian
10Glazebrook (Jana); her grandchildren, Gail Glazebrook Robles
11(Tony), Robert Earl Glazebrook III (Katharine), and Heidi
12Glazebrook Hickman (Kyle); and her great-grandchildren, Robert
13Earl Glazebrook IV, Everett Hickman, Olive Hickman, Johnny
14Glazebrook, and Antonio Robles; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
17Norma Jean Glazebrook and extend our sincere condolences to
18her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
19further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Norma Glazebrook as an expression
