SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Susan Marilyn (Strom) Mogerman of Springfield, who passed away on July 14, 2021; and

WHEREAS, Susan Mogerman was born in Chicago to David H. Strom and Sylvia Abelson Strom on June 11, 1945; she attended South Shore High School in Chicago, where she was active in the arts and dramatics; her artistic talents were recognized with a scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago; she attended the University of Illinois and the University of Missouri's School of Journalism; she married Jay Mogerman in Chicago on July 6, 1967; they moved to Springfield in 1970; and

WHEREAS, Susan Mogerman was among the young journalists who started The Illinois Times weekly newspaper; shortly thereafter, she was appointed to Governor Jim Thompson's Press Office, which began a long career of public service with the State of Illinois; she served as the director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency for more than a decade, where she was long involved in planning and developing the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum; she directed Downtown Springfield, Inc. before becoming the chief operating officer of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation, helping to build and open the facility; she also helped establish the foundation's Lincoln Leadership Prize, which has been presented to such luminaries as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, and astronaut Jim Lovell; and

WHEREAS, Susan Mogerman was a member of Congregation Temple Israel in Springfield, the synagogue's Sisterhood, and Hadassah; and

WHEREAS, Susan Mogerman was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dr. Terry Strom; and

WHEREAS, Susan Mogerman is survived by her husband, Jay; her sons, Josh Mogerman (Jo-Elle) and Rob Mogerman; her grandson, Isaiah; her brother, Michael; and a bevy of cousins, nieces, and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Susan Marilyn (Strom) Mogerman and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Susan Mogerman as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
