SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Samuel Herman "Sam" Swartzbaugh of
4West Salem, who passed away on March 5, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Sam Swartzbaugh was born in Bone Gap to Walter
6and Gertrude (Koertge) Swartzbaugh on July 30, 1927; he
7enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1945 and served for just
8under a year on the U.S.S. Knoxville, patrolling the
9mid-Atlantic; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Sam Swartzbaugh served in the U.S. Army from 1949
11to 1972, where he worked as a mechanic, fuel man, crane
12operator, and medical equipment inspector; during his over 23
13years of service, he spent nearly 18 years overseas and was
14stationed in several countries, including Germany, France, and
15Japan; he was awarded the Korean Service Medal and served two
16tours of duty in Vietnam; after retiring from the Army, he
17relocated his family to West Salem; and
 
18    WHEREAS, After his retirement from the Army, Sam
19Swartzbaugh worked at Champion Laboratories, attended Olney
20Central College, and also worked as a bus driver for the
21Edwards County School District; and

1    WHEREAS, Sam Swartzbaugh enjoyed gardening, working on his
2vehicles, and telling stories and tales of years past; he also
3enjoyed buying, selling, and working with his many Allis
4Chalmers tractors; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Sam Swartzbaugh was preceded in death by his
6parents; his wife of 48 years, Herta; and his grandson, Samuel
7James Swartzbaugh; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Sam Swartzbaugh is survived by his children, Ted,
9Francine Ruiz, Brian (Helen), Martin (Marla), Daniel, and
10Bettina (Paul) Carrell; 15 grandchildren; 5
11great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and his cousin,
12Loretta Buckles; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
15Samuel H. "Sam" Swartzbaugh and extend our sincere condolences
16to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
17it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the family of Sam Swartzbaugh as an expression of
20our deepest sympathy.
