SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of former Champaign Mayor Gerald "Jerry" Schweighart, who passed away on June 30, 2022; and

WHEREAS, Jerry Schweighart was born to Wilbur and Josephine Sullivan Schweighart in Champaign on May 4, 1938; he married Kim in Champaign on June 25, 1960; and

WHEREAS, Jerry Schweighart was a dedicated public servant with 32 years of service as a police officer and detective in the Champaign Police Department, six years on the Champaign City Council, and 12 years as mayor; and

WHEREAS, Jerry Schweighart loved his family and community, and he was always the first to crack a joke or lend a helping hand; he also loved to grab a coffee with friends at Merry Ann's or drop a fishing line any chance he could; he was happiest spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Jerry Schweighart was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Dennis Schweighart; his brothers, Richard and Marion; and his parents; and

WHEREAS, Jerry Schweighart is survived by his wife of 62 years, Kim; his sons, Jerry (Vita) Schweighart and Rory (Lesley Ponder) Schweighart; his daughter, Tami (Troy) Rhodes; his eight grandchildren, Tyler, Sydney, Lexi, Evan, Neal, Elizabeth, Nicole, and Jarrod; his great-grandchildren, Dax and Sloane; and his brother, John (Johannah) Schweighart; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of former Champaign Mayor Gerald "Jerry" Schweighart and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Jerry Schweighart as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
