HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the Village of Hanover Park
4on the occasion of its 2022 Juneteenth celebration; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating the
6abolition of slavery in the United States and its territories
7in 1865; it is also observed for celebrating African American
8culture; and
 
9    WHEREAS, President Abraham Lincoln enacted the
10Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, freeing slaves
11throughout the south; however, it was not until June 19, 1865,
12over two years later and over two months after General Robert
13E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, that slaves in
14Galveston, Texas received the news that the Civil War had
15ended and that the enslaved were freed, making it the official
16end of slavery; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Juneteenth has been typically observed on June
1819th since 1865; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The Hanover Park Sister Cities Committee will
20host Hanover Park's Juneteenth celebration at Ontarioville
21Plaza in Hanover Park on June 18, 2022, with live music,

1vendors, food trucks, activities for children, and more;
2therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
4HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5we recognize the Village of Hanover Park's Juneteenth
6celebration as a time to reflect and to commemorate the end of
7slavery; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to the Village of Hanover Park as an expression of
10our esteem and respect.
