SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of William Carlos Mitchell of East Moline, who passed away on November 18, 2019; and

WHEREAS, William Mitchell was born in East St. Louis to William F. and Evelyn (Cook) Mitchell on March 9, 1940; he married Hortense Jimison in East St. Louis on July 4, 1961; and

WHEREAS, William Mitchell worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service; and

WHEREAS, William Mitchell was a former member of Progressive Baptist Church in Davenport, Iowa; most recently, he was a member of Second Baptist Church in Rock Island; he was a Sunday school teacher and student and was active with the male chorus and brotherhood; he enjoyed helping others, visiting nursing homes, woodworking, and traveling; he was a great storyteller, songwriter, and grandfather; and

WHEREAS, William Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Eather Mitchell; his brother, Kevin; his infant sister; and his son, Todd Mitchell; and

WHEREAS, William Mitchell is survived by his wife of 58 years, Hortense; his children, Tia (Jimmie) Payne, Tracy Edwards, Theresa (Ron) Owens, Trina Mitchell, and Trevor Mitchell/Makin (Aasiyah) Hamzah; his grandchildren, Tiarra (Michael), Taylor, Perri, Mitchell, Morgan, Salahudin, and Rukan; his great-grandchildren, Aajon, Maite, and Aariyah; his siblings, Patryce Taylor, Karen (James) Farley, Debra Parker, and Deidre (Chris) Smith; his aunt, Iola Harrington; and numerous family and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of William Carlos Mitchell and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of William Mitchell as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
