SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, a
3501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, is currently celebrating
4its 130th anniversary; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Auditorium Theatre was first unveiled to great
6acclaim on December 9, 1889 in an evening featuring a
7performance by legendary opera singer Adelina Patti and an
8impassioned dedication speech by President Benjamin Harrison;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Auditorium Theatre has
11been an artistic venue for all people, regardless of race,
12creed, or income; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Due to its cultural and historic prominence, the
14Auditorium Theatre possesses the distinction as both a National
15Historic Landmark and a Designated Chicago Landmark; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Chicago's status as a world-class city and a
17destination for sublime cultural experiences has been shaped,
18in part, by the Auditorium Theatre's contributions throughout
19the years, including the theatre's ascendancy in the wake of
20the Great Chicago Fire and its role in securing Chicago as the
21location for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893; and

1    WHEREAS, Over 300,000 patrons visit the Auditorium Theatre
2each year, representing diverse backgrounds and a wide array of
3cultural perspectives; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Throughout the 2019-2020 season, the Auditorium
5Theatre is demonstrating its commitment to diversity and
6inclusion by presenting an eclectic array of exceptional
7programming so that all people from surrounding communities
8will have the opportunity to find inspiration, entertainment,
9and enjoyment through these varied artistic experiences; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The Auditorium Theatre was recently awarded the
11League of Historic American Theatres' Outstanding Historic
12Theatre Award in recognition of its substantial contributions
13to arts and culture and its profound historic significance; and
 
14    WHEREAS, It is important to celebrate the Auditorium
15Theatre's unparalleled history and incomparable tradition;
16therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that in recognition of the
19Auditorium Theatre's initial unveiling, we declare December 9,
202019 "Auditorium Theatre Day" in the State of Illinois, and we
21acknowledge this historic landmark's commitment to artistic

1excellence and community inclusion while celebrating the
2artists, performers, world leaders, authors, musicians, and
3cultural icons who have graced the auditorium's stage and
4enthralled tens of millions of patrons over the years; and be
5it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the Auditorium Theatre as a symbol of our respect
8and esteem.
