SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Calvin Raymond Smith of Hillsdale, who passed away on May 21, 2019; and

WHEREAS, Calvin Smith was born in Hillsdale to Edward and Lilias (Hart) Smith on May 26, 1929; he married Donna Jean Strause in Muscatine, Iowa on August 20, 1950; he served as an infantryman in the United States Army during the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart; he was discharged from active duty in 1952 and from the reserves in 1956; and

WHEREAS, Calvin Smith was employed at International Harvester for 30 years and retired in 1980; and

WHEREAS, Calvin Smith was a member of the Hillsdale American Legion for over 55 years; he joined the Jolly Rogers Camping Club in 1969; he enjoyed spending mornings at the Shell station with the guys, bird watching, and doing word puzzles; he was a handyman; most of all, he loved spending time with his family; and

WHEREAS, Calvin Smith was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna Jean; his granddaughter, Dawn Marie Vroman; his brothers, Ivry and Dale Smith and two in infancy; and his sister, Kay Elaine Parsons; and

WHEREAS, Calvin Smith is survived by his children, Marvin (Cindy) Smith, Clayton (Susan) Smith, Pamela Vroman, Lois Coleman, and Tina (Michael) Fulton; his sisters, Beverly Baker, Darlene (Virgil) Koch, Barbara Gerdes, and Bernice (Bill) Wainwright; his 13 grandchildren; and his 25 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Calvin Raymond Smith and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Calvin Smith as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
