SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Medal of Honor is the highest U.S. military
3decoration awarded by Congress to a member of the Armed Forces
4for gallantry and bravery in combat at the risk of life above
5and beyond the call of duty; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Over the last 20 years, the Medal of Honor
7Foundation has created and launched education, recognition,
8and outreach programs about the values embodied in the Medal of
9Honor that have inspired millions of Americans, the values of
10courage and sacrifice, commitment and integrity, and
11citizenship and patriotism; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Lester Crown and the Crown Family will be
13presented the Distinguished Service Award at the Salute to the
14Medal of Honor Gala celebration at the Union League Club of
15Chicago this year; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The Distinguished Service Award is presented to
17exceptional Americans who exemplify leadership and service and
18inspire others by selflessly giving of time and talent to the
19community and nation; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Over the next 20 years, the Medal of Honor
21Foundation will focus on preserving the legacy of the Medal of

1Honor and the true American heroes who wear it; and
 
2    WHEREAS, There are only 70 living recipients of the Medal
3of Honor; Illinois has had 106 Medal of Honor recipients since
4the Civil War; and
 
5    WHEREAS, These men are bound together by the Medal of Honor
6they wear and by the shared passion to perpetuate its legacy of
7courage, sacrifice, and selfless service; and
 
8    WHEREAS, With a sharp focus on young Americans, the Medal
9of Honor Foundation supports a broad range of initiatives to
10educate and inspire Americans to perpetuate and preserve the
11legacy of the Medal of Honor; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The Medal of Honor Foundation will be in Chicago
13to celebrate their 20th anniversary and honor Chicago with over
1420 Medal of Honor recipients visiting Chicago Public Schools
15and VA homes; and
 
16    WHEREAS, On June 7, 2019, the Salute to the Medal of Honor
17Gala will celebrate the legacy of the Medal of Honor, those who
18received the Medal in honor of their bravery and courage on
19behalf of the United States of America; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare June 7, 2019
2as Medal of Honor Day in Illinois; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That this day presents an opportunity for adults
4and children to research the history of the Medal of Honor and
5help promote its legacy, which includes courage and sacrifice,
6commitment and integrity, and citizenship and patriotism to our
7country, our State and our communities and to personally
8recognize those who have served or currently serve in any
9branch of the Armed Forces, Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and
10Coast Guard, and thank them for their service.
