SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Betsy G. Berry of Michigan City, Indiana, who passed away on April 26, 2019; and

WHEREAS, Betsy Berry was born in Chicago; she served in the U.S. Navy in the 1940s and graduated from Roosevelt University; she married Edwin C. "Bill" Berry in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in September 1956; and

WHEREAS, Betsy Berry had a successful career as a real estate agent in the Hyde Park area; and

WHEREAS, Betsy Berry moved to Michigan City, Indiana in the late 1980s; she worked with the Three Oaks Food Pantry and volunteered at the homeless shelter; she was on the Literacy Advisory Board of the Michigan City Public Library, where she tutored English as a second language; she was a mentor at the Hours For Ours program at Michigan City schools and served as a board member of the North Central Community Action Agency; she was dedicated to promoting civil rights throughout her lifetime; and

WHEREAS, Betsy Berry was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her adopted son, Myron H. Wahls; and her brother, Robert M. Bell; and

WHEREAS, Betsy Berry is survived by her adopted children, Joseph M. Berry, Charles Carter, Westina Matthews Shatteen, and Melanie Berry; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews; and numerous friends in the Michigan City and Chicago area; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Betsy G. Berry and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Betsy Berry as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
