SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Carrie Lou Jones of Chicago, who passed
4away on July 16, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Carrie Jones was born in Oxford, Mississippi to
6Elijah Vaughn and Mandy Ella Vaughn on January 24, 1931; she
7was the second of eight children; she attended Oxford Training
8School; she married John McEwen in 1949, and he preceded her in
9death; together, they had 10 children; she earned her
10Associate's in Early Childhood Education from Loop Junior
11College, now known as Harold Washington College; she married
12Joe Jones, and he preceded her in death; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Carrie Jones worked at the University of
14Mississippi before moving to Chicago in 1953; after earning her
15associate's degree, she worked as an educator for many years
16and loved working with children; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Carrie Jones committed to her faith at an early
18age at Second Baptist Church in Oxford, Mississippi; she became
19a member of Old Ship of Zion Church in 1973; she became a
20member of the Cathedral Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago in
211975, where she served as president of the Pastor's Aide, the
22Missionary Board, and the Mother's Board; and

1    WHEREAS, Carrie Jones was an active member of the United
2American Progress Association; she enjoyed board games, card
3games, dominoes, and solving crossword puzzles; she loved
4spending time and creating memories with her family; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Carrie Jones was preceded in death by her parents;
6her husbands; her daughter, Mary Jean; her sisters, Lillie
7Ruffin, Dorothy Pratt, Betty Martin, and Alfreda Walker; her
8brother, Eddie Vaughn; and three grandchildren, Tyler McEwen,
9Samuel Thomas, and Nacole Nieto; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Carrie Jones is survived by her children, Robert
11(Brender), Shirley (Gary), Idella (Elias), Doris (Orius),
12John, James (Linda), Carolyn, Cedric (Juanita), and Erwin
13(Debee); her 29 grandchildren; her 51 great-grandchildren; her
14nine great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Judge Ivy Jr.;
15her sister, Dilcy Ivy; her sister-in-law, Cecilia Vaughn; a
16host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her lifelong friends,
17Annie Bell Wilson and Virgie Lee Maylor; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
20Carrie Lou Jones and extend our sincere condolences to her
21family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
22further

1    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2presented to the family of Carrie Jones as an expression of our
3deepest sympathy.
