SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Judge Thomas Patrick Carmody, who passed away on October 23, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Judge Thomas Carmody was born to Stephen and Marie (Howard) Carmody in Chicago on June 21, 1932; he graduated from Carlinville High School in 1950, from Blackburn College in 1954, and from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 1957; he married Joan Daily in 1961; and

WHEREAS, Upon graduation from law school; Judge Thomas Carmody began practicing law in Carlinville; beginning in 1960, he served as Assistant State's Attorney of Macoupin County for one term; while maintaining his private law practice, he was elected State's Attorney from 1964 to 1972; he joined the law practice of Edward Phelps, John Russell, and Carl Kasten in 1973; he was elected Circuit Court Judge of the 7th Judicial Circuit in 1990 and served in this role until his retirement in 2004; and

WHEREAS, Judge Thomas Carmody was a member of Saints Mary and Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Elks Lodge; he served for many years on the Board of Directors of Carlinville National Bank (now CNB Bank & Trust), on the Blackburn College Board of Trustees, and on the New Calvary Catholic Cemetery Board; and

WHEREAS, Judge Thomas Carmody was an avid sports fan, especially of Carlinville High School, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the University of Notre Dame; and

WHEREAS, Judge Thomas Carmody was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife; his sister, Mary Jo Herendeen; and his brother, Charles ("Chuck") Carmody; and

WHEREAS, Judge Thomas Carmody is survived by his sister, Ann O'Rourke; his son, Steve (Tracy) Carmody; his daughter, Susan (Tim) Taylor; his six grandchildren, Clare (Jack) Connors, Patrick, Ryan, and Adare Carmody, and Grace and Cate Taylor; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Judge Thomas Patrick Carmody and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Judge Thomas Carmody as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
