SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Leland Gene "Lee" Zimmerman of Eureka, who passed away on October 17, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Lee Zimmerman was born in Eureka to Lawrence and Lena (Leman) Zimmerman on December 18, 1933; he served in the U.S. military during the Korean War; he married Laurene Schambach in Elgin on June 14, 1959, and she preceded him in death on December 30, 1999; he married Barbara Ringger in Eureka on March 10, 2002; and

WHEREAS, Following the retirement of their parents, Lee Zimmerman and his sister, Caroll, owned and operated the C & L Superette; after closing the family grocery business in 1977, he worked at Ben Schwartz IGA and Eureka IGA, retiring in 1998; he also founded and operated The Ice House, which made and distributed ice to local businesses; he founded and operated Lee's Metals, which provided the local community a place to bring in various metals and other recyclable goods; his love of people and serving others led him to working for the Morton Community Bank in his retirement, where he provided courier services and could share his smile and bring a smile to everyone's face; and

WHEREAS, Lee Zimmerman was affectionately known as "Gramps" by his grandchildren; he was an engaging story teller; he was a member of the Eureka Apostolic Christian Church, where he was baptized on January 18, 1953; he served many years as a Sunday school teacher, song leader, and trustee; and

WHEREAS, Lee Zimmerman was preceded in death by his first wife, Laurene; his parents; his infant sister, Twila Zimmerman; his sister, Caroll Zobrist; his son-in-law, Fred Leman; and his grandsons, Gabriel Leman and Samson Zimmerman; and

WHEREAS, Lee Zimmerman is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, Mark (Cheryl) Zimmerman, Denise (Kevin) Kilgus, Brenda (Jay) Hartman, Michael (Gretchen) Zimmerman, and Matthew (Sara) Zimmerman; 25 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Leland Gene "Lee" Zimmerman and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Lee Zimmerman as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
