SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of William T. "Bill" Henderson of Urbana,
4who passed away on June 11, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Bill Henderson was born at the family home in
6Ridge Farm to Ted and Susie (Satterlee) Henderson on October 5,
71929; he graduated from Ridge Farm High School and received a
8scholarship to the University of Illinois to study
9floriculture; he also became active in the McKinley Foundation
10student group; he received his bachelor's degree from the
11University of Illinois in the spring of 1951 and was
12commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army's
13Quartermaster Corps; he completed his active service and was
14promoted to first lieutenant; he received an honorable
15discharge from the Army; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Bill Henderson returned to the U.S. and was
17accepted at McCormick Theological Seminary; he married Kathryn
18Luther on August 22, 1953; he received his master's degree in
19library science from the University of Chicago and his Master
20of Divinity from McCormick Seminary; he served for seven years
21as the seminary's first acquisitions librarian; he also became
22an ordained minister; and

1    WHEREAS, As his wife was invited to join the faculty of the
2Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Bill
3Henderson accepted a position at the University of Illinois at
4Urbana-Champaign in 1965 in the emerging field of preserving
5library collections as they aged; he and his wife taught
6preservation courses as a team and organized conferences
7related to preservation; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Bill Henderson received the University of
9Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science
10Alumni Association's Distinguished Service Award in May of
112011; and
 
12    WHEREAS, For many years, Bill Henderson was the secretary
13of the Alpha Chapter of Beta Phi Mu, the international library
14and information science honor society; in November of 2014, he
15and his wife were recognized by the Alpha Chapter with the
16establishment of the Kathryn Luther and William T. Henderson
17Award; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Bill Henderson was a member of the Champaign
19County Farm Bureau; for many years, he and his wife served on
20the selection committee that determined the recipients of the
21Champaign County Farm Bureau Foundation agricultural
22scholarships; he received a Luther Circle Award for his service
23to the scholarship program; and

1    WHEREAS, Bill Henderson was a member of St. Peter's United
2Church of Christ, where he served on various committees and had
3a role in Christian education endeavors, his favorite role; as
4an ordained minister, he could perform other ministerial
5duties; he was also a longtime member of the American Library
6Association, the American Theological Library Association, and
7the Illinois Library Association; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Bill Henderson was preceded in death by his
9parents; his brother, Joseph David Henderson; his niece, Cheryl
10Lynn Henderson; his parents-in-law, Carl F. and Ida Lietz
11Luther; and his sister-in-law, Mildred Luther; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Bill Henderson is survived by his wife of 67
13years, Kathryn; his sister-in-law, Annette Gulder Henderson;
14his nieces, Susan Tracy McDaniel and Carol Lynn Christenson;
15and his nephew, Joseph David Henderson; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
18Bill Henderson and extend our sincere condolences to his
19family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
20further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
