SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Congress passed the 19th Amendment to the
3Constitution of the United States, guided by the shared ideals
4of freedom, sovereignty, democracy, civil liberties, and
5individual rights; and
 
6    WHEREAS, From 1919 to 1920, the Sixty-Sixth Congress
7debated, and state legislatures considered, an amendment to the
8Constitution to provide suffrage for women; and
 
9    WHEREAS, On May 21, 1919, the U.S. House of Representatives
10approved a proposed amendment, followed by the Senate a few
11weeks later on June 4, 1919; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The introduction, passage, and ultimate
13ratification of the 19th Amendment were the culmination of
14decades of work and struggle by advocates for the rights of
15women across the United States and worldwide; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The ratification of the 19th Amendment ensured
17women could more fully participate in our democracy and
18fundamentally changed the role of women in the civic life of
19our nation; and
 
20    WHEREAS, August 18, 2020 marks the centennial of the

1ratification of the 19th Amendment by three-fourths of the
2states, providing the support necessary under Article V of the
3Constitution of the United States; and
 
4    WHEREAS, August 26, 2020 marks the centennial of the 19th
5Amendment becoming a part of the Constitution of the United
6States, providing for women's suffrage; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare August 26,
92020 as "Women's Suffrage Day" in the State of Illinois.
