SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Martha Alice Nelson-Pugh, who passed away
4on February 17, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Martha Nelson-Pugh was born in Pace, Mississippi
6to Willie and Sophia Nelson on October 19, 1928; she moved with
7her family to Chicago in 1946 and married Willie James Pugh
8Sr.; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Martha Nelson-Pugh's faith was an important part
10of her life; in her younger years, she was an active member of
11her community and was affectionately called "Momma" by many;
12"The Candy Lady" was her name to the children in the
13neighborhood, and she was lovingly known by friends as "Big
14Red"; she could always bring everyone together whether it was
15for a family meal or a game of Keno; and
 
16    WHEREAS, After raising her children and helping raise her
17grandchildren, Martha Nelson-Pugh continued caring for others
18and added to her family; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Martha Nelson-Pugh was preceded in death by her
20husband, Willie Sr.; her daughter, Betty Jean; her sons, Melvin
21and Arthur; her sisters, Mary Alice, Ruby Lee, and Catherine;

1her brothers, Charlie and Ely; her grandson, Raymond; and her
2parents; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Martha Nelson-Pugh is survived by her children,
4Loretta (Elmer) Taylor, Coy (Jackie) Pugh, Willie Jr. (Corliss)
5Pugh, Carl Pugh, Tonyja Thomas, Jermaine Pugh, Patrick Pugh,
6Kareema Pugh, and Coy (Angel) Pugh; her grandchildren, Richard
7Pugh, Elmer Jr.(Qeena) Taylor, LaShawn Burrell,
8Shulanda(Me'Jan) Sullivan, Chiquita Harris, Sohn Green, Nicole
9Pugh, Montisha Thomas, Courtney Pugh, Carl Miller, Kenneth
10Thomas, Jared Pugh, Keyarra Thomas, Anthony Thomas, Justice
11Pugh, Ahmariyah Pugh, and Alinani Pugh; 39 great-grandchildren
12and 12 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces,
13nephews, family members, and friends; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
15ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
16Martha Alice Nelson-Pugh and extend our sincere condolences to
17her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
18further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Martha Nelson-Pugh as an expression
21of our deepest sympathy.
