HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic will be
3celebrating its fifth anniversary at the Clinic's annual Spring
4Event on May 7, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Clinic was founded after the City of Highland
6Park Human Services Task Force performed a needs assessment and
7identified a lack of access to legal services in the city; its
8purpose is to provide accessible, quality pro-bono legal
9services in the areas of immigration, domestic violence, and
10housing to give those in need of access to justice the
11opportunity to live productive and secure lives; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The Clinic has experienced immense growth since
13its inception; it served served 875 clients in 2019, compared
14to the 84 it served in 2015; by the end of August in 2019, it
15had already served more clients than it had in all of 2018; it
16has expanded from serving two communities in 2015 to serving
17ten communities throughout northern Cook County and southern
18Lake County in 2019; and
 
19    WHEREAS, By the end of September in 2019, the Clinic's
20immigration practice had handled over 315 immigration matters,
21compared to 290 in all of 2018; it continues to expand its
22immigration partnerships by offering monthly off-site clinics

1and hosting Know Your Rights presentations; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The Clinic recognizes domestic violence as a
3critical health issue and, by the end of September in 2019, had
4helped over 160 survivors; in October of 2019, it led a
5Domestic Violence Awareness Month campaign that included
6partnering with municipalities and townships; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Clinic continues to protect housing rights by
8helping tenants stay in their homes, acquire the return of
9wrongfully withheld security deposits, and avoid wrongful
10evictions; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Through its geographic expansion, fundraising
12efforts, educational initiatives, and outreach and advocacy,
13the Clinic continues to be a trusted legal resource for the
14low-income communities in northern Cook County and southern
15Lake County; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
17HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
18we congratulate the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic on its
19fifth anniversary and commend its continued efforts to provide
20legal aid to those most in need; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
