HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Jane Addams was born in Cedarville on September 6,
31860; she became a leading, profound voice in civic
4responsibility, education, and legislation and a promoter of
5peace; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Jane Addams was valedictorian of Rockford Female
7Seminary in 1881 and received her bachelor's degree in 1882;
8and
 
9    WHEREAS, In 1889, along with Miss Ellen G. Starr, Jane
10Addams opened Hull House for the underprivileged in Chicago;
11Hull House hosted up to 2,000 people every week and produced
12numerous impactful programs within its walls, including an art
13gallery, employment bureau, a boarding club for girls, and
14other programs; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The purpose of Hull House was to provide a center
16for a higher civic and social life, to institute and maintain
17educational and philanthropic enterprises, and to investigate
18and improve the industrial districts of Chicago; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Jane Addams created significant opportunities for
20immigrants, and, being an ardent feminist by philosophy, she
21encouraged women to work to obtain their right to vote; and

1    WHEREAS, In 1906, Jane Addams gave a course of lectures at
2the University of Wisconsin; the following year, she published
3these lectures under the title Newer Ideals of Peace; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Jane Addams was appointed to Chicago's Board of
5Education in 1905 and served as chairman of the School
6Management Committee; in 1908, she was one of the founders of
7the Chicago School of Civics and Philanthropy; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Jane Addams broke down barriers and persevered in
9the face of resistance; she established many milestones,
10including being the first woman to receive an honorary degree
11from Yale University in 1910, founding the Women's
12International League for Peace and Freedom in 1919, and her
13acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931; and
 
14    WHEREAS, In the United States of America, Jane Addams
15worked to help the poor and to stop the use of children as
16industrial laborers; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
18HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we recognize Jane Addams's role as a philanthropist,
20humanitarian, sociologist and president of an international
21organization and honor her for her efforts to promote peace;

1and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That we acknowledge Jane Addams as a deserving
3daughter in the State of Illinois and therefore declare
4September 6, 2020 as the Jane Addams Day of Service.
