HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representatives wishes to
3congratulate the owners of Old Fashioned Candies, Sandra
4Figatner, Donna Greenwald, and Lynn White, on receiving the
535th Annual Charles E. Piper Award from the Berwyn Development
6Corporation; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Charles E. Piper Award is awarded annually to
8individuals in recognition of their business achievements and
9contribution to the economic vitality of the City of Berwyn;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, Old Fashioned Candies was founded in Chicago by
12George and Theresa Brunslik in August, 1969; In 1976, the
13company moved to Berwyn, where they are still proudly going
14strong today; the family business has since been passed down to
15the second generation, sisters Sandra, Lynn, and Donna, with
16the third generation as part of the staff; and
 
17    WHEREAS, All Old Fashion Candies products are manufactured
18out of the Berwyn location and sold at their two locations,
19Berwyn and Indian Head Park; On August 13, 2019, Sandra, Lynn
20and Donna celebrated 50 years of Old Fashioned Candies being in
21business; and

1    WHEREAS, While leading busy personal and professional
2lives, Sandra, Lynn, and Donna have always found time to
3contribute to their community; Old Fashioned Candies
4participates in Berwyn's Taste of Cermak and the Houby Day
5Parade every year; every January, Old Fashioned Candies hosts a
6Candlelight Bowl with 100 percent of the proceeds going to a
7deserving recipient; Over $100,000 in proceeds has been donated
8over the course of the event's 27 years; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The sisters and the rest of the Old Fashioned
10Candies teams also collect and send supplies to the Fisher
11House and local animal rescues, participate in Career Days at
12the local schools and Berwyn's summer camp, donate to local
13fire departments, honor the teachers at Morton West High School
14for Teacher Appreciation Day with a chocolate fountain, provide
15home cooked meals for individuals and families that come in
16during the holidays, and donate and volunteer with United Way
17and the Special Olympics; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Each year around Easter, Old Fashioned Candies
19runs a raffle and donates Giant George, a 3-foot chocolate
20rabbit, with all proceeds going to the Muscular Dystrophy
21Association; every December, Mr. and Mrs. Claus visit Old
22Fashioned Candies free of charge for anyone who wants to visit;

1    WHEREAS, Sandra Figatner is a graduate of Morton College;
2she is the proud mother of two children and the wife of the
3late William Figatner of longtime Berwyn business
4Figatner-Scott Co.; Donna Greenwald is a proud mother of three
5and grandmother of six; she recently retired from UPS after 31
6years of service, while also working full-time at the candy
7store; Lynn White is a proud mother of one and is the president
8of her bowling league; she has five years under her belt as a
9past PTA president and is in the PTA hall of fame; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The Old Fashioned Candies' doors are always open
11to anybody that wants to stop in, chat, and sample some candy;
12therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
14HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15we congratulate Old Fashioned Candies on receiving the Charles
16E. Piper Award; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
18presented to Sandra Figatner, Donna Greenwald, and Lynn White
19as an expression of our esteem and respect.
