HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Global climate change is a result of human behavior; the effects of global climate change can be minimized by adopting sustainable practices, such as recycling; and

WHEREAS, The United States makes up 4% of the global population, yet, as a nation, we generate more than 30% of the planet's waste; 65% of products in the U.S. end up in a landfill or become incinerated; many of these products can be reused or recycled; and

WHEREAS, The Illinois Public Interest Research Group Education Fund has reported that Illinois falls behind other states in regard to recycling; Illinois generates an estimated 19% more waste per capita than the average state in the U.S.; the City of Chicago has the lowest recycling rate, at only 9% of all waste being recycled; and

WHEREAS, November 15 of each year is America Recycles Day, which is a perfect opportunity to encourage recycling and other green initiatives on a statewide and national level; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare November 15, 2019 as "Go Green Day" in the State of Illinois to raise awareness for recycling in the State of Illinois and encourage residents to learn about the importance of recycling and other green initiatives.
