HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Barbara A. Murphy of Glen Ellyn, who passed away on March 3, 2019; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Murphy was born on December 24, 1937 and grew up in Connecticut, where she attended Greenwich Academy; she attended Skidmore College in New York and settled in Glen Ellyn in 1962; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Murphy was the longest serving DuPage County Republican Chairwoman; she was dedicated to good government and the Republican Party; she began her career as a volunteer for Richard Nixon's campaign in California in 1960; she was the first woman to be elected as a Milton Township Trustee and the first woman to be elected as chairman of the Milton Township Republican Central Committee; she served under Secretaries of State George Ryan and Jesse White as a member of the Illinois Motor Vehicle Review Board; she was appointed to the Illinois Toll Highway Advisory Board by Governor Jim Edgar and served for five years; she was a state central committeewoman for the 6th Congressional District in the 1980s; most recently, she was on the boards of the DuPage Civic Center Authority and the DuPage County Domestic Violence Task Force; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Murphy was a former co-owner of the Daffy Down Dilly gift shop in Glen Ellyn; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Murphy was a member of the Inland Western Retail Sales Trust Board; she was a founding member of The Friends of Family Shelter; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Murphy is survived by her sons, David (Patti), Jeffrey (Kim), Brooks (Amy), and Bradley (Bridget); nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Barbara A. Murphy and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Barbara Murphy as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
