HOUSE RESOLUTION

2    WHEREAS, A trisomy is a type of polysomy in which there are
3three instances of a particular chromosome, instead of the
4normal two; a trisomy is a type of aneuploidy, an abnormal
5number of chromosomes; and

6    WHEREAS, Most organisms have pairs of chromosomes in each
7cell, with one chromosome inherited from each parent; in such
8organisms, a process called meiosis creates cells called
9gametes that have only one set of chromosomes; and

10    WHEREAS, The number of chromosomes is different for
11different species; humans have 46 chromosomes, or 23 pairs of
12chromosomes, and human gametes have only 23 chromosomes; and

13    WHEREAS, If the chromosome pairs fail to separate properly
14during cell division, the egg or sperm may end up with a second
15copy of one of the chromosomes; if such a gamete results in
16fertilization and an embryo, the resulting embryo may also have
17an entire copy of the extra chromosome; and

18    WHEREAS, Full trisomy, also called primary trisomy, means
19that an entire extra chromosome has been copied; partial
20trisomy means that there is an extra copy of part of a
21chromosome; secondary trisomy means the extra chromosome has

1quadruplicated arms; tertiary trisomy means the extra
2chromosome is made up of copies of arms from two other
3chromosomes; and

4    WHEREAS, Trisomies can occur with any chromosome but often
5result in a miscarriage, rather than a live birth; and

6    WHEREAS, Trisomy 16 is the most common trisomy in human
7pregnancies, occurring in more than one percent of pregnancies;
8and

9    WHEREAS, Pregnancies in which some normal cells occur in
10addition to the trisomic cells, or mosaic trisomy 16, survive;
11this condition, however, usually results in a spontaneous
12miscarriage in the first trimester; and

13    WHEREAS, The most common types of autosomal trisomy that
14survive to birth in humans are Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome),
15Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome), Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome), and
16Trisomy 8 (Warkany syndrome 2); therefore, be it

17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
18HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we declare the month of March 2019 as Trisomy Awareness Month
20in the State of Illinois, and we urge all citizens of this
21State to become aware of the different types of Trisomy; and be
