SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of one of its former colleagues, Vivian
4Veach Hickey, who passed away on April 28, 2016 in Marin
5County, California; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Senator Vivian Hickey, a daughter of western
7Illinois, received a bachelor's degree from Rockford College
8and a master's degree in dramatic arts from the University of
9North Carolina before settling in Rockford; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Senator Vivian Hickey married Francis E. Hickey, a
11prominent attorney in Rockford, with whom she raised three
12sons; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Senator Vivian Hickey was active in the civic and
14cultural life of Rockford, especially in the League of Women
15Voters, Rock Valley College, Rockford College, and the
16Democratic Party; and
 
17    WHEREAS, In May of 1974, Senator Vivian Hickey was
18appointed to fill the 34th District Senate seat vacated by the
19death of Senator Betty Ann Southwick Keegan; she was elected to
20that seat in November of 1974; and

1    WHEREAS, Senator Vivian Hickey served the people of
2Rockford and Illinois faithfully and with distinction during
3her terms in the Illinois State Senate from 1974 to 1979,
4always promoting transparency and civility in government and
5with the goal of making Illinois a better place to live for
6future generations; and
 
7    WHEREAS, After her retirement from the Senate in 1979,
8Senator Vivian Hickey continued to be active in public life in
9Rockford until she retired to Marin County, California; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Senator Vivian Hickey celebrated her 100th
11birthday on March 25, 2016, in the knowledge that she had
12served her community well and had earned the admiration and
13affection of her family, friends, and the people of Illinois;
14therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we expresses our
17appreciation for the life of Senator Vivian Veach Hickey and
18offer our sincere condolences to her family and friends, as
19well as the citizens of Rockford; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Senator Vivian Hickey as an
22expression of our sympathy.
