SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Philip Michael Doherty, Sr. of East
4Moline, who passed away on November 29, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Philip Doherty, Sr. was born in New York, New York
6on May 29, 1930; he attended St. Meinrad's Seminary before
7being drafted into the military; he served during the Korean
8War, stationed mainly in Germany and achieving the rank of
9Sergeant; after his service, he attended Marion College in
10Indianapolis, Indiana and Penn State, where he received his
11master's degree in German; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Philip Doherty, Sr. was so taken with Germany that
13he became an associate professor of German, first at Notre Dame
14University and then at Loyola University; he later settled in
15Moline, where he was the German teacher at Moline High School
16for nearly 30 years; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Philip Doherty, Sr. was heavily involved in local
18musical theater at the Quad City Music Guild and taught himself
19to tap dance; he enjoyed telling jokes, storytelling, singing,
20and playing the guitar, the piano, and the accordion; he also
21enjoyed classical music and philosophy; he hated sports but
22loved PDQ Bach, Monty Python, the TV show "Soap", target

1shooting, and Blatz beer; he played German folk music in the
2background almost all the time on reel-to-reel tape recorders
3he "borrowed" from Moline High School, and, when he took his
4family camping in their pop-up Starcraft camper, he often sang
5folk songs in German and English around the campfire every
6night and made everyone join in; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Philip Doherty, Sr. was preceded in death by his
8son, Richard; his wife, Anna; his 3 brothers; and his grandson,
9Gabe Mattly; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Philip Doherty, Sr. is survived by his 4 children,
11Colleen Romanelli, Pamela Ramos, Sheila (Mike) Mattly, and Phil
12Doherty; his 4 grandchildren, Branden Engleking, Marisa and
13Karina Ramos, and Nicolas Mattly; and his great-grandchild,
14Philip; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
17Philip Michael Doherty, Sr., and extend our sincere condolences
18to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
19it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Philip Doherty, Sr. as an expression
22of our deepest sympathy.
