SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, All citizens of the State of Illinois should be
3made aware of the issue of teen suicide; and
 
4    WHEREAS, The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
5recognizes National Suicide Prevention Week annually during
6the week that corresponds with World Suicide Prevention Day on
7September 10; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The United States Department of Health and Family
9Services' Office of Adolescent Health recognizes the American
10Association of Suicidology's Suicide Prevention Week annually
11during the week that corresponds with World Suicide Prevention
12Day on September 10; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The United States Centers for Disease Control and
14Prevention lists suicide as the 3rd leading cause of death for
15youth between the ages of 10 and 24; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
17reported the findings of a nation-wide survey that found that,
18of the youth in grades 9-12 surveyed, 16% reported seriously
19considering suicide, 13% reported creating a plan, and 8%
20reported that they attempted to take their own life at some
21point within the 12 months preceding the survey; and

1    WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
2reports that 4,600 lives of youth between the ages of 10 and 24
3are lost annually; therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
5ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, we designate the month of
6September of 2015 as Teen Suicide Prevention Month in the State
7of Illinois and urge all Illinoisans to educate themselves
8about teen suicide prevention.
