HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the Polish Museum of America,
4one of the oldest ethnic museums in the United States; and
 
5    WHEREAS, In 1931, a fire destroyed the Polish Library and
6National Museum at Alliance College in Cambridge Springs,
7Pennsylvania; the Polish-American community began looking for
8a new venue in the United States that would both promote Polish
9culture and history and the Polish presence in North America;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, The Polish Museum of America was established in
121935 and officially opened its doors on January 12, 1937 as the
13Museum and Archives of the Polish Roman Catholic Union of
14America; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The Polish Museum of America is located in the
16heart of Chicago's historic Polish Downtown, a neighborhood
17that functions as Polish America's cultural capital; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The Polish Museum of America promotes the
19knowledge of Polish history and culture by offering paintings,
20sculptures, drawings, and lithographs by well-known artists;
21it offers exhibits such as lectures, movies and slide

1presentations, theater performances, and meetings with schools
2and people from all over the world who are dedicated to Polish
3Culture; and
 
4    WHEREAS, The Polish Museum of America serves as the focus
5of official commemorations of Casimir Pulaski Day, where
6various city and State officials congregate to pay tribute to
7Chicago's Polish Community; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
10recognize the Polish Museum of America and we wish them many
11more successful years; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the Polish Museum of America as a symbol of our
14respect and esteem.
