HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of former
4State Representative John S. Matijevich, who passed away on
5November 3, 2016; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Representative Matijevich was born in North
7Chicago to Mike and Anna Matijevich on December 25, 1927; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Representative Matijevich served in the United
9States Army before serving the citizen of North Chicago as the
10Police Magistrate and later the Police Chief of the city; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Representative Matijevich served as an Illinois
12State Representative from 1967 to 1993, where he was a proud
13advocate for the many workers in his blue collar district and
14provided a voice as a "people's advocate" for those whose
15voices were underrepresented; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Representative Matijevich was a fervent believer
17in open, accountable government operations; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Representative Matijevich was a consumer
19advocate, before the term was in vogue, through his efforts to
20create the Citizens Utility Board and tussles with the Illinois

1Commerce Commission and Illinois Toll Highway Authority; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Representative Matijevich's commitment to
3community was embodied through his decades of service to groups
4like the Croatian Fraternal Union, the Moose, and Knights of
5Columbus; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Representative Matijevich wrote newspaper columns
7for the North Chicago Tribune and the Lake County Journal, and
8was active in his community throughout his life; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Representative Matijevich was able to watch his
10beloved Chicago Cubs win the World Series a few hours before
11his death; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Representative Matijevich is survived by his wife
13of 60 years, Agnes; his son, who was the apple of his eye,
14Robert; his sister, Rose; and many other family members and
15friends; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
17NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
18mourn the passing of former State Representative John S.
19Matijevich, and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
20friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

2presented to the family of Representative Matijevich as an
3expression of our respect and deepest sympathy.
