HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, An ovarian cyst is a collection of fluid inside a
3woman's ovaries; most ovarian cysts occur during ovulation and
4usually go away within a few months, without any treatment;
5most ovarian cysts are benign, but a small number of them are
6cancerous; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer often progresses to an advanced
8stage before it is detected; 77% of women are diagnosed after
9the disease has reached an advanced stage; despite advancements
10in surgery and chemotherapy treatments, the overall 5-year
11survival rate for women with advanced stage ovarian cancer has
12remained constant over the past 30 years at approximately 15%;
13women diagnosed with early stage (Stage I) ovarian cancer have
14an overall 5-year survival rate approaching 90 to 95%;
15early-stage detection of ovarian cancer is the best way to
16improve survival; more than 20,000 women in the United States
17are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, and approximately
1815,000 women die annually from the disease; and
 
19    WHEREAS, There is currently no early detection test for
20ovarian cancer; until there is a test, the key to early
21diagnosis is awareness, and the key to awareness is knowing the
22subtle symptoms of ovarian cancer and urging women to take
23early action; and

1    WHEREAS, The mission of the National Ovarian Cancer
2Coalition (NOCC) is to save lives by fighting to prevent and
3cure ovarian cancer, and to improve the quality of life for
4survivors; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Through national programs and local chapter
6initiatives, the NOCC's goal is to make more people aware of
7the early symptoms of ovarian cancer; the NOCC provides
8information to assist the newly diagnosed patient, to provide
9hope to survivors, and to support caregivers; NOCC programs are
10possible only with the help of volunteers, committed men and
11women dedicated to the mission of the NOCC in communities
12across the country; and
 
13    WHEREAS, September of 2016 is Ovarian Cancer Awareness
14Month; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
16NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
17declare September 11-17, 2016 as "Ovarian Cyst Awareness Week"
18in the State of Illinois and we urge people to do all that they
19can to increase awareness of the dangers that some women face
20with ovarian cysts; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
