HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Retinoblastoma is a malignant cancer that
3develops in the retina during early childhood; most children
4diagnosed with the disease are younger than 3 years old; it is
5often found when a parent or doctor notices that a child's eye
6displays unusual signs or symptoms; and
 
7    WHEREAS, If the disease goes undetected, retinoblastoma
8requires the removal of the eye to keep the disease from
9spreading to the optic nerve and the brain; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Retinoblastoma is a rare disease, with only about
11200 to 300 children diagnosed with the disease each year in the
12United States; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The members of this body believe that greater
14attention must be placed on raising awareness of retinoblastoma
15and other cancers in order to fight these debilitating diseases
16and the effects they have on the citizens of this State;
17therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
20designate the month of September as Childhood Cancer Awareness
21Month in the State of Illinois and urge the citizens of this

1State to ask their pediatricians to perform red-reflex tests on
2their children in order to aid in the fight against
3retinoblastoma and other childhood cancers; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to BeyondRB as a symbol of our respect and esteem for
6the organization's work.
