    Amends the Veterans' Home Nurses' Loan Repayment Act. Renames the Act as the Veterans' Home Medical Providers' Loan Repayment Act. Renames the Nurse Loan Repayment Program as the Medical Providers Loan Repayment Program. Requires that the program provide assistance, subject to appropriation, to eligible physicians and nurses (rather than nurses). Provides that an applicant is eligible for a grant under the program if the Illinois Student Assistance Commission finds that the applicant is working as a physician, registered professional nurse, or certified nursing assistant (rather than as a registered professional nurse). Makes related changes. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Veterans' Home Medical Providers' Loan
5Repayment Act is amended by changing Sections 1, 5, and 20 as
6follows:

8    Sec. 1. Short title. This Act may be cited as the Veterans'
9Home Medical Providers' Nurses' Loan Repayment Act.

12    Sec. 5. Medical Providers Nurse Loan Repayment Program.
13There is created, beginning July 1, 2007, the Medical Providers
14Nurse Loan Repayment Program to be administered by the Illinois
15Student Assistance Commission in consultation with the
16Department of Veterans' Affairs. The program shall provide
17assistance, subject to appropriation, to eligible physicians
18and nurses.

21    Sec. 20. Eligibility.

1    (a) The Commission shall, on an annual basis, receive and
2consider applications for grant assistance under the program.
3An applicant is eligible for a grant under the program if the
4Commission finds that the applicant:
5        (1) is a United States citizen or permanent resident;
6        (2) is a resident of Illinois;
7        (3) is working as a physician, registered professional
8    nurse, certified nursing assistant, or licensed practical
9    nurse in a State veterans' home;
10        (4) is a borrower with an outstanding balance due on an
11    educational loan; and
12        (5) has not defaulted on an educational loan.
13    (b) Preference may be given to previous recipients of a
14grant under the program, provided that the recipient continues
15to meet the eligibility requirements set forth in this Section.
16    (c) For each year during which an individual receives a
17grant under this program, he or she must fulfill a separate
1812-month period as a physician, registered professional nurse,
19certified nursing assistant, or licensed practical nurse in a
20State veterans' home.

22    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
23becoming law.
