AMENDMENT TO HOUSE BILL 1407

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend House Bill 1407 by replacing
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4    "Section 5. The Hospital Licensing Act is amended by
5changing Section 11.7 as follows:
 
6    (210 ILCS 85/11.7)
7    Sec. 11.7. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Education.
8    (a) A hospital shall provide, free of charge, information
9and instructional materials regarding sudden infant death
10syndrome (SIDS), explaining the medical effects upon infants
11and young children and emphasizing measures that may reduce the
12risk. The materials shall include information concerning safe
13sleep environments developed by the American Academy of
14Pediatrics or a statewide or nationally recognized SIDS or
15medical association.
16    (b) The information and materials described in subsection

1(a) shall be provided to parents or legal guardians of each
2newborn, upon discharge from the hospital. Prior to discharge,
3a nurse or appropriate staff person shall review the proffered
4materials with the infant's parents or legal guardian and shall
5discuss best practices to reduce the incidence of SIDS as
6recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
7    (c) Nothing in this Section prohibits a hospital from
8obtaining free and suitable information from a public or
9private agency.

11    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
12becoming law.".
