SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of James A. McDermott, Sr. "Jim" of Bunker
4Hill, who passed away on May 16, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jim McDermott was born in Portland, Maine on April
621, 1951 to Dr. Leo James McDermott and Jane Bernice (nee
7Haley); he attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from
8Cheverus High School and St. Louis University; he married
9Rosalind Anne Daly on May 11, 1974; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Jim McDermott spent most of his life teaching
11special needs children and retired as the Special Education
12Department Head, Work Experience Coordinator, and Emergency
13Operations Coordinator at Nottingham Community Access Job
14Training High School in May of 2014; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Jim McDermott served in many capacities with the
16American Heart Association, beginning in St. Louis where he
17served as a Program Associate for Emergency Cardiac Care and
18Fitness Programs between 1980 and 1985; he volunteered with
19local fire departments and emergency agencies as a paramedic,
20basic life support instructor, EMT instructor, and CERT
21instructor over the period of more than 30 years; in 1985, his
22family moved to the Birmingham, Alabama area and he became the

1Affiliate Program and later Management Director for the
2American Heart Association, Alabama Affiliate; he was very
3involved in multi-agency programs and was the co-founder of the
4Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Alabama; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jim McDermott was a recipient of numerous awards
6from the State of Alabama for his work with health agencies and
7efforts to protect children's health; he was also very active
8with the Knights of Columbus and had served in several
9leadership positions at the local and state levels; he was
10recognized by the Alabama State Council as the 1994-1995 Knight
11of the Year; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Jim McDermott was an amateur radio enthusiast and
13member of the Lewis and Clark Radio Club; he was a Skywarn
14weather spotter and enjoyed his volunteer work in many local
15community service events; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Jim McDermott was preceded in death by his
17parents; sister-in-law, Sharon (Guimont) McDermott; and
18brothers-in-law, Walter H. Daly and Robert F. Driscoll, Jr.;
19and
 
20    WHEREAS, Jim McDermott is survived by his wife, Rosalind
21"Buzzy"; children, Erin and James, Jr. (Seamus); 4
22grandchildren, Andrew, Carey, Emily, and Olivia McDermott;

1siblings, Leo J. McDermott, Jr., Frances T. Driscoll, Jane B.
2McDermott, Jr., and Susan E. Mortenson; brothers-in-law,

4Lee Mortenson; and 3 sisters-in-law, Sr. Thomas More Daly OSU,
5Angela Anderson, and Eileen Daly; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
8James A. McDermott, Sr. "Jim", and extend our sincere
9condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
10him; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Jim McDermott as an expression of
13our deepest sympathy.
