SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Janie Morrison of River Grove, who passed
4away on November 9, 2013; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Janie Morrison was born on August 5, 1949 in
6Peoria; her parents were Earl and Ruth Morrison; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Janie Morrison graduated from Central College in
81971 with a Bachelor of Arts in Rhetoric and Communication
9Arts; she went on to receive a Master of Education in Speech
10Pathology from Trenton State College in New Jersey; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Janie Morrison enjoyed a long and distinguished
12career in public service and was known as a fierce, relentless,
13and passionate advocate for justice; after working for the
14Neshaminy Federation of Teachers, she began her career at the
15Temple Association of University Professionals in
16Pennsylvania, where she served as Executive Director from 1992
17to 2001; in January of 2002, she returned to the Chicagoland
18area to work as an assistant to Norman Swenson, President of
19the Cook County College Teachers Union; and
 
20    WHEREAS, While working at the Cook County College Teachers
21Union, Janie Morrison met Illinois State Senator Dan Kotowski

1during his senatorial campaign in 2006; following his victory,
2Senator Kotowski asked her to become his District Director,
3where she served with pride and integrity until her passing;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, As District Director, Janie Morrison was a
6successful champion for constituents and veterans facing
7employment, healthcare, and housing challenges; she became
8well known by the people of her community for her great
9compassion and eagerness to help those most in need; during her
10career, she spearheaded the organization and execution of 6
11community job fairs and the creation of the Flight 191 Memorial
12in Des Plaines; she also aided in the educational and
13professional growth of over 30 interns during her time as
14District Director; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Janie Morrison's lifelong passion was sailing;
16she raced boats as a child and, as an adult, owned a sailboat
17and regularly floated home on the Delaware River in
18Pennsylvania; she also enjoyed Disney films and memorabilia;
19and
 
20    WHEREAS, Janie Morrison is survived by her mother, Ruth,
21and her longtime companion, Sigurd Larsen; therefore, be it
 
22    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her
2family and friends, mourn the passing of Janie Morrison; and be
3it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Janie Morrison as an expression of
6our sympathy.
