HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to recognize Chicago Tribune
4reporter Gary Marx on receiving the Education Writers's Award
5for his series with David Jackson on truancy; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Education Writers Association has given a top
7award to a 2012 Chicago Tribune series that used internal
8Chicago attendance data to reveal a devastating pattern of
9school absences in grades K-8 that disproportionately affects
10African-American youth and children with disabilities; while
11Chicago officials for years published upbeat attendance
12statistics, the newspaper found roughly 32,000 elementary
13students missed at least a month of classes in a year, while
14thousands more simply vanished from the attendance rolls; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Chosen from among hundreds of submissions across
16the country, the series won first prize for investigative
17reporting among large newspapers; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Days after the publication of the series in
19November 2012, State lawmakers began working on reforms aimed
20at saving thousands of children from isolation and failure; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Gary Marx is an investigative reporter with the

1Chicago Tribune; he started at the Tribune in 1988; he has been
2the paper's South America correspondent (1990-1994), covered
3criminal justice, and served on the foreign staff based in
4Havana, Cuba from 2002-2007; he has covered numerous armed
5conflicts and U.S. military operations including Iraq,
6Somalia, Hati, and Colombia; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Gary Marx is a 2-time Pulitzer Prize finalist in
8investigative reporting; other national awards he has received
9include the Heywood Broun Award, the IRE FOI Medal, the
10Education Writers Association Grand Prize, and a National Press
11Club Award; for his abroad work, he has received the Overseas
12Press Club Citation, the Maria Moors Cabot Prize, and the
13Inter-American Press Association Human Rights Award; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Gary Marx began his journalism career in 1983 with
15the Christian Science Monitor and later joined the Orlando
16Sentinel; he has a bachelors of arts from Harvard and a masters
17degree from the London School of Economics; in 2001, he was a
18John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford and in 2008 he was
19a visiting Fellow at Notre Dame's Kellogg Institute of
20International Studies; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
22NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
23we recognize Chicago Tribune reporter Gary Marx on receiving

1the Education Writers's Award for his series with David Jackson
2on truancy and thank him for his efforts in investigative
3journalism to uncover those stores that need to be told; and be
4it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to Gary Marx as an expression of our esteem and
7respect.
