HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to celebrate the 100th anniversary
4of the 1913 Illinois law granting women the right to vote for
5President of the United States and municipal officers; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The law went into effect when it was signed by
7Illinois Governor Edward F. Dunne on June 26, 1913; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The passage of the law made the State of Illinois
9the first state east of the Mississippi River to allow women to
10vote in presidential elections; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Over 200,000 women in the State voted in the 1914
12election, helping to pave the way for the passage of the 19th
13Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1920, which gave
14full suffrage to all women in the nation; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The members of this body are proud of Illinois'
16pioneering role in granting the women of the nation their
17hard-won rights; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
20we celebrate the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in the

1State of Illinois and urge the citizens of this State to join
2us in celebrating this great milestone.
