SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/3-623  from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 3-623

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that a person eligible to be issued Purple Heart plates may display the plates on one vehicle without the payment of any registration or registration renewal fee. Provides that for a person who has been issued Purple Heart plates for an additional vehicle and who has been approved for benefits under the Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons Property Tax Relief Act, the annual fee for the registration of the vehicle shall be $24.

1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by changing
5Section 3-623 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/3-623)  (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 3-623)
7    Sec. 3-623. Purple Heart Plates.
8    (a) The Secretary, upon receipt of an application made in
9the form prescribed by the Secretary of State, may issue to
10recipients awarded the Purple Heart by a branch of the armed
11forces of the United States who reside in Illinois, special
12registration plates. The Secretary, upon receipt of the proper
13application, may also issue these special registration plates
14to an Illinois resident who is the surviving spouse of a person
15who was awarded the Purple Heart by a branch of the armed
16forces of the United States. The special plates issued pursuant
17to this Section should be affixed only to passenger vehicles of
18the 1st division, including motorcycles, or motor vehicles of
19the 2nd division weighing not more than 8,000 pounds. The
20Secretary may, in his or her discretion, allow the plates to be
21issued as vanity or personalized plates in accordance with
22Section 3-405.1 of this Code. The Secretary of State must make
23a version of the special registration plates authorized under

1this Section in a form appropriate for motorcycles.
2    (b) The design and color of such plates shall be wholly
3within the discretion of the Secretary of State. Appropriate
4documentation, as determined by the Secretary, and the
5appropriate registration fee shall accompany the application,
6except:
7        (1) a person eligible to be issued Purple Heart plates
8    may display the plates on one vehicle without the payment
9    of any registration or registration renewal fee; and
10        (2) . However, for an individual who has been issued
11    Purple Heart plates for an additional a vehicle and who has
12    been approved for benefits under the Senior Citizens and
13    Disabled Persons Property Tax Relief Act, the annual fee
14    for the registration of the vehicle shall be as provided in
15    Section 3-806.3 of this Code.
