    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides for issuance of U.S. Coast Guard license plates, with eligibility requirements to be determined by the Secretary of State. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding
5Section 3-699.14 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/3-699.14 new)
7    Sec. 3-699.14. U.S. Coast Guard license plates.
8    (a) In addition to any other special license plate, the
9Secretary, upon receipt of all applicable fees and applications
10made in the form prescribed by the Secretary of State, may
11issue U.S. Coast Guard license plates to residents of Illinois
12who meet eligibility requirements prescribed by the Secretary
13of State. The special U.S. Coast Guard plate issued under this
14Section shall be affixed only to passenger vehicles of the
15first division, motorcycles, and motor vehicles of the second
16division weighing not more than 8,000 pounds. Plates issued
17under this Section shall expire according to the staggered
18multi-year procedure established by Section 3-414.1 of this
19Code.
20    (b) The plates shall display the U.S. Coast Guard emblem.
21In all other respects, the design, color, and format of the
22plates shall be within the discretion of the Secretary of
23State. The Secretary may, in his or her discretion, allow the

1plates to be issued as vanity plates or personalized in
2accordance with Section 3-405.1 of this Code. The plates are
3not required to designate "Land of Lincoln", as prescribed in
4subsection (b) of Section 3-412 of this Code. The Secretary
5shall prescribe the eligibility requirements and, in his or her
6discretion, shall approve and prescribe stickers or decals as
7provided under Section 3-412.
 
8    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
9becoming law.
