SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Julia G. Beck Davenport, who passed away
4on March 7, 2012; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Julia Davenport was born on October 10, 1920, in
6Pace, Mississippi; her parents were Cleveland and Louise Beck;
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, Julia Davenport attended elementary school in
9East St. Louis; in 1938, she graduated from Lincoln Senior High
10School; she subsequently furthered her education at Lincoln
11University in Jefferson City, Missouri, the Logistic
12Management School at Fort Lee, Virginia, and other management
13schools; she later studied and received 3 certificates of
14progress in Christian Education; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Julia Davenport joined Friendship Missionary
16Baptist Church in 1930; in 1957, she accepted the position of
17Church Clerk at the church; in that position, she helped the
18youth and senior citizens with legal matters and training; she
19served as President of Senior Citizens, where she arranged many
20trips and dinners; she organized the church's first Vacation
21Bible School in 1960; she served as Chairperson of the Mortgage
22Burning of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in 1962, as

1well as the Women's Day, Church Anniversary, Family and Friends
2Day, Vacation Bible School Picnic Coordinator, and Pastor's
3Anniversary events; she served as teacher and Assistant
4Superintendent for the church's Sunday School and represented
5the Sunday School at National Baptist Congress for many years;
6she also served as Dean Chairman of the Board of Christian
7Education and was a member of the Mother's Ministry; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Julia Davenport was employed by the United States
9government for over 37 years, where she was an Inventory
10Management Specialist; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Julia Davenport was involved with numerous
12community organizations, including the Model City Board Member
13of the National Council of Negro Women, Ethel Scott Section,
14NAAC, Queen Elizabeth Chapter #16, Order of Eastern Star,
15Eureka Grand Chapter, Star of Illinois Jurisdiction, Aahmes
16Court 84, Daughter of Iris, the Elks Club, and the Senior Board
17Citizen Nutrition Program; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Julia Davenport was preceded in death by her
19parents; her husband, John Davenport; her siblings; and her
20stepson and stepdaughter; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Julia Davenport is survived by her daughters,
22Rowena Davenport (Bennie Sr.) Lewis and Joan Davenport Moore;

1her stepson, John C. (Betty) Davenport, Jr.; her grandchildren,
2Bennie, Jr., Roderick (Michelle), Dr. Carla Lewis Longley
3(Ronald), and Ernell Rodgers Thacker (Michael); her 15
4great-grandchildren; her 8 great-great-grandchildren; her
5godson, Judge Milton Wharton; her special niece, Geraldine
6Owens Jackson; her sister-in-law, Laura Beck; her oldest
7cousin, Charlotte Dobbins; her daughter-in-law, Eva Davenport;
8her son-in-law, Jimmie Bradley; and her many nieces, nephews,
9cousins, and friends; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
12her family and friends, the passing of Julia G. Beck Davenport;
13and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the family of Julia Davenport as an expression of
16our sympathy.
