SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Asa Philip Randolph was noted for his work with
3labor; his leadership role in the Civil Rights arena has always
4been understated; he was the lead architect for the 1963 March
5on Washington, D.C., for which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
6received the credit; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Asa Philip Randolph, with the help of Bayard
8Rustin and many others, set the tone and direction for a
9proposed march on Washington in 1940, designed to ask the
10nation's leaders to desegregate munitions plants; and
 
11    WHEREAS, President Franklin D. Roosevelt desegregated
12these plants during World War II with Executive Order 8802, the
13Fair Employment Act; that Act set the tone for
14African-American's in the labor movement in the United States;
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, Asa Philip Randolph was the first
17African-American to have a seat on the board of the AFL-CIO,
18serving as Vice-President; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Asa Philip Randolph established the Brotherhood
20of Sleeping Car Porters and the National Negro Congress; and

1    WHEREAS, The A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum in
2Chicago has asked all of the residents of the State of Illinois
3to honor this great labor leader on the occasion of his 123rd
4birthday by proclaiming April 15, 2012 as A. Philip Randolph
5Day in the State of Illinois; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that April 15, 2012 be named
8A. Philip Randolph Day in the State of Illinois, and that all
9Illinoisans are invited to join in the celebration of his birth
10at the A. Philip Randolph Museum in Chicago; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to Dr. Lyn Hughes, founder of the A. Philip Randolph
13Museum in Chicago, as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
