SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Dean C. Howard of Peoria, who passed away
4on August 1, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dean Howard was born on November 17, 1918, in
6Cleveland, Ohio; his parents were Thomas and Florence Dean
7Howard; he married Patricia Smith on May 26, 1945, in Sandusky,
8Ohio; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Dean Howard served as a lieutenant with the United
10States Navy's Third Fleet in the Pacific theatre during World
11War II; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Dean Howard served as a professor at Bradley
13University in the music department for 36 years until his
14retirement in 1984; he was a former member of the Peoria
15Symphony, the Peoria Municipal Band, and the Bradley Community
16Chorus and Orchestra; during this time, he also served at the
17choir director of the 1st United Methodist Church in East
18Peoria and the Forrest Hill United Methodist Church in Peoria;
19and
 
20    WHEREAS, While teaching at Bradley University, Dean Howard
21received the Putnam Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1962,

1the Outstanding Educator's Award in 1973, and the Who's Who in
2Music in 1974; many of his compositions have been published
3and, in 1983, he was commissioned to compose "Celebration" for
4the Peoria Civic Center opening; he also enjoyed playing the
5piano; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Dean Howard was self-taught in watercolor and
7received numerous awards from 1965 to 1990; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Dean Howard was preceded in death by his wife and
9his sister, Marion; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Dean Howard is survived by his sons, Tim (Sandi)
11Howard, Tom (Debbie) Howard, and Ted Howard, and his grandsons,
12Christopher and Patrick Howard; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
15his family and friends, the passing of Dean C. Howard; and be
16it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Dean Howard as an expression of our
19sympathy.
