SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois General Assembly wish
3to honor the great work of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King
4Jr. for his contributions for bringing justice and equality to
5millions of Americans; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. deserves to be
7recognized more significantly for his work in urban America;
8and
 
9    WHEREAS, Many places in Illinois have street signs, public
10buildings, and statues that honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King
11Jr. and his work; and
 
12    WHEREAS, A street in Chicago known as Dr. Martin Luther
13King Jr. Drive runs from 26th Street in the north to 115th
14Street in the south; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The Far Southside communities recognized as
16Rosemoor and Roseland Heights have, within its boundaries, the
17only public bridge along the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive
18corridor; and
 
19    WHEREAS, On August 27, 2011, the public and its elected
20officials assembled to recognize the importance of this day

1marking the anniversary of the March on Washington (1963) and
2the National Democratic Nomination of U.S. Senator Barack Obama
3for President of the United States (2008); and
 
4    WHEREAS, In August of 2011, The City of Chicago recognized
5by letter the significant importance of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther
6King Jr. and supported community recommendations to dedicate
7the State Bridge located at 99th and 100th Streets and Dr.
8Martin Luther King Jr. Drive as a Memorial Bridge; and
 
9    WHEREAS, In 2011, the public raised a significant amount of
10money to build a statue of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in
11the Washington Mall; the public also held a historical event on
12October 16, 2011; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
15CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the bridge located at 99th
16and 100th Streets and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in
17Rosemoor and Roseland Heights as the "Dr. Martin Luther King
18Jr. Memorial Bridge"; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
20is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
21State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
22giving notice of the name of the "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

1Memorial Bridge"; and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
3delivered to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of
4Transportation and the Chicago City Council.
