SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/3-694 new

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides for the issuance of ABATE special license plates for passenger vehicles of the first division, motor vehicles of the second division weighing not more than 8,000 pounds, and motorcycles. Provides that, in addition to the appropriate registration fees, an applicant for the special plates shall be charged a fee of $15 at original issuance and $2 at each renewal. Provides that the additional fees shall be deposited into the Secretary of State Special License Plate Fund. Effective January 1, 2012.

1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding
5Section 3-694 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/3-694 new)
7    Sec. 3-694. ABATE license plate.
8    (a) The Secretary, upon receipt of an application made in
9the form prescribed by the Secretary of State, may issue
10special registration plates designated as ABATE license
11plates. The special plates issued under this Section shall be
12affixed only to passenger vehicles of the first division, motor
13vehicles of the second division weighing not more than 8,000
14pounds, and motorcycles. If the Secretary of State issues the
15special plates for passenger vehicles of the first division or
16motor vehicles of the second division weighing not more than
178,000 pounds, then the Secretary of State must also make the
18special plates available for motorcycles. Plates issued under
19this Section shall expire according to the multi-year procedure
20established by Section 3-414.1 of this Code.
21    (b) The design and color of the plates shall be wholly
22within the discretion of the Secretary of State. The Secretary
23of State may, in his or her discretion, allow the plates to be

1issued as vanity plates or personalized in accordance with
2Section 3-405.1 of this Code. The Secretary of State shall
3prescribe stickers or decals as provided under Section 3-412.
4    (c) An applicant shall be charged a $15 fee for original
5issuance in addition to the applicable registration fee. For
6each registration renewal period, a $2 fee, in addition to the
7appropriate registration fee, shall be charged. The additional
8fees shall be deposited into the Secretary of State Special
9License Plate Fund.
 
10    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect January
