HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Jerry Sloan was born and raised in Gobbler's Knob,
315 miles south of McLeansboro; he is the youngest of 10
4children and was raised by his mother after his father died
5when he was 4 years old; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Jerry Sloan graduated as an all-State player from
7McLeansboro High School in 1960; he went on to play basketball
8at the University of Evansville; he led Evansville to the NCAA
9College Division Championship twice, including a perfect 10
1029-0 season in 1965; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Jerry Sloan was first selected by the Baltimore
12Bullets in 1964 during the third round of the NBA Draft, but
13opted to remain in college; he was subsequently selected by the
14Baltimore Bullets again during the 1965 NBA Draft with the 4th
15pick; he played for the Bullets for one season and then went on
16to play for the Chicago Bulls during the team's early years;
17and
 
18    WHEREAS, Jerry Sloan led the Bulls to several playoffs and
19helped them to win one division title; he averaged 9.1 rebounds
20per game in his second season, and his career rebounding
21average of 7.4 rebounds per game was seen as unusually high for
22a guard; he is currently 4th on the Bulls' all-time scoring

2    WHEREAS, Jerry Sloan's playing career was cut short by a
3string of knee injuries and switched from playing to coaching;
4in 1979, he became the Bulls' head coach; in December of 1988,
5the Utah Jazz chose him as the team's as the new head coach; he
6went on to enjoy a highly successful run of 16 consecutive
7seasons of taking the team to the playoffs; he led the Jazz to
86 division championships and 10 seasons with greater than 50
9wins; he also led the Jazz to the NBA Finals twice; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Jerry Sloan has had a life-long record of
11achievement in the sport of basketball and an exemplary record
12as an NBA coach, becoming only the 5th NBA coach in history to
13attain 1000 victories and the only NBA coach in history to
14receive 1,000 wins with the same team, the Utah Jazz; in April
15of 2009, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball
16Hall of Fame; and
 
17    WHEREAS, In recognition of Jerry Sloan's lifelong record of
18hard work, dedication, and exemplary achievement in the sport
19of basketball, Hamilton County High School will rename its
20gymnasium as the Sloan Gymnasium on December 15, 2012;
21therefore, be it
 
22    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE

1NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
2we honor Jerry Sloan on this very special occasion of
3recognizing his life-long pursuit of excellence in the sport of
4basketball and outstanding record of achievement in that great
5pastime; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7delivered to Jerry Sloan as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
